Your Insider’s Guide to Winter Clothing Clearances

Post-holiday sales are a goldmine for winter clothing deals.

Gone are the festive lights and towering gift mountains, replaced by aisles brimming with winter apparel slashed with tempting discounts. Who doesn’t love a winter clothing clearance? But before you dive headfirst into this shopper’s paradise, a little savvy can make all the difference between scoring an epic winter wardrobe refresh and getting lost in a blizzard of bargains.

To learn more about how to get the best deals on the January clearances and how to save on winter fashion, we talked to Trae Bodge, smart shopping expert at Truetrae.com  and @truetrae on Instagram.

Maximize Savings with the Right Credit Card

If you’re shopping at Target and happen to have a RedCard, Bodge advises to use it to earn 5% cashback. “If you don’t have a store card, a quick Google search of the credit cards in your wallet will show you which cards offer cash back or points on retail purchases,” she notes. If you find that your cards don’t have that benefit, Bodge says to consider signing up for one that does, like the annual fee-free Bread Cashback American Express, where you earn 2% cashback on everything you buy.

Leveraging Deal Sites

You can often save on top of holiday clearance sales by using deal sites, Bodge says.  “I suggest installing browser extensions, so you’ll automatically be alerted to available coupons as you shop online,” Bodge notes. The SimplyCodes extension and app automatically give you a comprehensive list of promo codes for you to use at checkout.

Timing is Everything

Clearance waves typically peak around mid-January, with brands like Nordstrom Rack and J.Crew Factory leading the charge. Macy’s Backstage joins the fray shortly after, and by February, even luxury retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus start offering enticing markdowns. So, patience is your ally – wait for the sweet spot before the pickings become slim. Clearance winter coats and jackets are especially abundant at this time of year.

Nordstrom Rack has 70% off markdowns on winter clothing deals in the late winter season on their website.

The Benefits of In-Person Shopping

While the siren song of online convenience is undeniable, brick-and-mortar stores shouldn’t be discounted. Yes, sifting through racks can be a scavenger hunt, but you might stumble upon hidden gems passed over by digital shoppers. Online, however, tools like Google Shopping and ShopStyle become your best friends, scouring the web for the best deals across brands and retailers.

The question is, online or in-store? The answer, like a well-styled outfit, is layered. For high-demand brands or specific items, online might offer a wider selection. But for surprise discoveries and the thrill of the hunt, venturing out can yield unexpected joy. Just remember, inventory varies both online and in-store, so be open to adapting your search based on what you find.

Understanding Markdowns

“Clearance” usually signifies the deepest discounts, while “markdown” often indicates a smaller price drop. Don’t shy away from stacking discounts — coupons, store credit and promotional offers can multiply your savings. However, don’t get swept away by the frenzy. Know your budget and prioritize wisely. Focus on versatile pieces, like a cozy sweater you can wear all winter long or sleek boots that transition seamlessly into spring. Prioritize quality over quantity, investing in staples that will last beyond the season.

Try The Target Clearance Run

One of Bodge’s favorite post-holiday sales is the Target Clearance Run, which occurs right after Christmas. “Savings tend to be up to 50% off on apparel, footwear, holiday décor, beauty gift sets and more,” Bodge notes. “Walmart also has a big post-Christmas sale, with deep discounts on holiday décor and other items. Home Depot and Lowes are known for their post-holiday discounts on faux trees.”

Deals on Accessories

Don’t neglect accessories. Scarves, hats and gloves often receive generous markdowns, adding stylish warmth and personality to your winter wardrobe. And if you’re feeling extra strategic, consider stocking up on future birthday and holiday gifts – there’s no better time to find bargains that please everyone.

Stock Up On Beauty Sets Bargains

Beauty gift sets will also be on sale after the holidays at stores like Target and Ulta, Bodge notes. This is a great time to snag them for upcoming winter birthdays — and also a good time to simply stock up on those essentials you buy and rebuy throughout the year, as these sets tend to be discounted.

Navigating Post-Holiday Sales

Ultimately, the post-holiday winter apparel sales are an opportunity to celebrate – to revel in the joy of finding hidden treasures, the satisfaction of a smart purchase, and the thrill of refreshing your wardrobe for less.

So, arm yourself with the right information, a clear sense of purpose and a dash of adventurous spirit, and prepare to conquer the sales like a seasoned style-savvy shopper. As the snow melts and spring approaches, let your winter wardrobe bloom with stunning finds and savvy savings.
